24 Hours in Seattle

On the way home from Alaska, my colleague and I decided to break up the journey with a quick stopover in Seattle. Not knowing more about Seattle than sometimes people are sleepless in it, and they like to throw fish at the market, I was excited but sure didn't quite know what to expect. Note to you -don't follow my lead - make sure to research before you arrive in a place. As much as I love exploring an entire place as much as possible, I wasn't too worried about missing something in Seattle. (Sorry for Seattle-residents, your city is really great, but man was I tired from Anchorage).
Lucky for me, I had a Seattle-area native take us on a quick walking tour of the city, to explain the city's nuances and take us to explore the hustle and bustle of the busy Pike Place Market on a Saturday. I focused most of my time here, because, well I am fascinated by worldwide markets. I like to see the fresh fruits and vegetables, and the local artisans creating their products. It's something that has stood the test of time, and although the specific products may be different, the basic premise is the same. We shop for fresh produce, picking up flowers to brighten up our homes, and stocking our houses with our favourites. France, Morocco, the US, Thailand or India, markets are at the core of a city, and I love visiting them to remember how similar all nations are. Oh, and markets often have sweet treats like fresh apple cider and hot donuts straight from the deep fryer, so how can you resist?
In addition to my time wandering around the market (and stuffing my face with hot mini-donuts), I also visited the famous Seattle Edgewater Hotel. It is quite literally, on the edge of the water. I think it must have one of the best views of the ocean and distant mountains in the city. Having a drink in their bar was a quintessential travel moment for me. Soaking in a place, and indulging in a bit of luxury. If I can't stay there, I can at least pretend for a few moments that I am.
Here are some of my favourite photos from my 24 hours in Seattle.
